Have you ever stopped and wondered which type of wax is in your candles, or where it comes from?
There are a couple of options when it comes to candle wax but the ones you may have heard of are soy wax and paraffin wax. Is there a difference, wax is just wax isn't it? Well, actually these two wax's couldn't be more different!
Let’s start with the good, soy is a vegetable wax from natural origin - the soy bean. We use this for all of our candles, being a sustainable company this was always going to be the wax we chose to work with.
Our wax is harvested from sustainable sources which means for all the soy plants used more are replanted and no animal habitat is lost or harmed in anyway.
Now for the bad, paraffin wax is derived from petroleum, coal, oil and steric acid - animal fat!
You guessed it, paraffin was is not sustainable at all. It is unfortunately still the most popular wax for candle makers due to its low price and easy accessibility. A lot of well known, very expensive candle brands still use with this harmful wax.
Below are a few of our favourite reasons why you should choose soy wax candles.
·      Soy wax is a much healthier, natural alternative to paraffin wax in that it does not release dangerous carcinogens into the air when melted like paraffin wax does. Burning and/or melting paraffin releases at least 11 known toxins including acetone, benzene and toluene, which have been shown to be carcinogenic.
·      Soy wax burns much slower than paraffin making your candle last longer, which is always good.
·      It holds essential oils much better than paraffin giving you a better smelling candle.
·      Soy wax is carbon - neutral, meaning it has no negative impact on the planet.
·      Candles made from soy wax burn cleaner with little soot released. Paraffin candles often create a significant amount of black soot that collects on the jar, as well as on your walls and other surfaces of the home.
So the next time you buy a soy wax candle you are making a better choice for yourself and the planet.
